Today five new trail postings for Acadia National Park went live on Maine Trail Finder, bringing the total trails posted in Acadia to 23! These new trails offer short, easy walks that wind through forests and along the coastal shoreline, as well as more challenging climbs with scenic views of the ocean and islands below.
The Jesup Path and Hemlock Road Loop is an easy 1.5 mile walk through the Great Meadow featuring stands of birch and hemlock trees. The Jesup Path becomes a beautiful boardwalk through a boggy, white birch forest, before crossing with Hemlock Road, where the trail passes through a forest of large hemlocks for which the road was named. Ship Harbor Trail is another easy loop through varied terrain that leads along the shore of a narrow, picturesque cove.
The Jordan Pond Path and the surrounding area is an excellent place to appreciate Acadia's glacially carved landscape. As glaciers moved through the area thousands of years ago, they created "U" shaped valleys, and long finger lakes and ridge lines which run north and south. This 3.3 mile moderate trail, that is rugged in some sections, follows the shore of Jordan Pond, providing iconic views of steep, glacially sculpted mountains and the glacially carved valley.
Hikers can find challenging trails with rewarding views in Bald Peak and Parkman Mountain Trails and the Dorr Mountain South Ridge Loop. Bald Peak and Parkman Mountain Trails provide an advanced, steep, and rocky hike to the top of two barren granite peaks overlooking Upper Hadlock Pond and the outlying islands. The Dorr Mountain South Ridge Loop offers a longer six mile trek along a stream and forested valleys featuring panoramic views of Mount Desert Island from the top of Dorr Mountain. The South Ridge Trail is a moderately steep climb to the summit of Dorr Mountain at 1,270 feet. Before the steep and rugged descent, the trail affords spectacular views of the ocean and offshore islands in the distance.
These five postings bring the total live postings on Maine Trail Finder to 255!
