Today Grafton Notch State Park went live on Maine Trail Finder adding three new postings to northern Oxford County. The park offers advanced day hiking opportunities in Old Speck and Eyebrow Trails and Baldpate and Table Rock Trails as well as shorter family-friendly options in Moose Cave, Mother Walker Falls, and Screw Auger Falls day-use areas.
Old Speck and Baldpate offer challenging hiking following the Appalachian Trail southbound to Old speck Mountain and northbound to Baldpate Mountain respectively. Both peaks offer great views of the surrounding area, and Old Speck is one of Maine’s “4000 footers” at 4180 ft and is widely recognized as Maine’s third highest peak. An observation tower at the top offers incredible views from the wooded peak. Baldpate Mountain’s two peaks, West and East Peaks, offer great views of the northern Mahoosuc Region, but is open East Peak that offers the more spectacular views.
The Eyebrow and Table Rock trails offer shorter loop trails off of Old Speck and Baldpate Trails respectively, but don’t be fooled by the shorter distances. Both hikes are challenging with steep sections and high elevations. The Eyebrow Trail requires in several places the use of iron rungs and ladders. Both these smaller loops still lead to spectacular scenic overlooks with views of Grafton Notch and Bear River Valley.
The scenic area and short walks at Moose Cave, Mother Walker Falls, and Screw Auger Falls are more family friendly and provide an opportunity to explore the unique geological features of the park left by its glacial past.
These three posting bring the total live postings on Maine Trail Finder to 94, just six postings short of the 100 milestone. Prepare to see this milestone fly by in the upcoming weeks!
