Description

The trails on the 40-acre Sklar Park offer loops back into forests leaving from either trailhead. The trails, marked with white blazes and Orono Land Trust Trails signs, pass over Johnny Mac Stream on bridges designed and built by the local Boy Scouts. Most of the trails beyond the stream cover rocky forest floor while passing through relatively mature tree stands with open understory.

Alternate trailheads provide access to Sklar Park from the Boy Scouts office and Dirigo Pines Retirement Community.

Other Information

The park is a 1985 gift from the David Sklar Family to the Town of Orono and is manage by OLT and the Town. The property abuts private lands with trail connections to the Dirigo Pines retirement community, the Katahdin Area Boy Scout Council building, Rampe Conservation Easement, and Orono High School land.

Dogs need to be under control of their owners. Please observe the carry-in carry-out policy.

Trail Tips

Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
Stick to established trails and campsites. If there's no trail, try to walk on rock, gravel, or snow and spread out so that your group doesn't create a trail.

Hiked on 6/27/2020. Entered from Gilbert St. and followed trail to Mainewood Ave. then to Interstate Trail and went to large bridge that connects to Rampe Conservation Easement and Orono High School trails. Backtracked then followed to Boy Scouts/Dirigo Pines trails, using the loop to head back to Gilbert St. However, I took a wrong turn and ended up on the grass trail behind Page Pl. Luckily, I was able to find my way back without issue after that!

Pros: Neat trail system for low-key hiking - will definitely be back! Some areas on the trail are getting overgrown or have fallen trees but nothing that was impassable.

Cons: Trails are not marked that well and it would be great to have more detailed maps on-site and throughout the trail. To cross the stream behind the Mainewoods Ave. trailhead, you have to walk along a single plank, whereas the Gilbert St. trailhead has a couple nice bridges.
