About This Event

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW) has many roles in helping to preserve and conserve Maine’s wildlife. There are variety of jobs and people that work for the Department, wardens, biologists, educators, administrative specialists, cartographers, animal keepers, policy specialists, and so much more. Some work in offices across the state, and some get to spend time in the field.

Join us as we meet Steve Dunham, MDIFW Regional Wildlife Biologist of the Downeast Region. Learn about the role regional biologists play and the type of work they do to preserve, conserve, and promote Maine’s wildlife and wild places. Steve will give us an overview of how different projects help to maintain healthy wildlife populations and habitats. Learn what it takes to be a regional biologist and the important work they do. We will also discuss how you and the Blue Hills Heritage Trust are a part of this important work. We are all in this together to help preserve Maine’s wild places for generations to come.

Steve Dunham is the Regional Wildlife Biologist at the MDIFW Jonesboro Regional Office, supervising a staff of two Biologists responsible for wildlife issues in towns from Isle au Haut to Vanceboro. He administers the region’s animal damage control program, manages 13 Department owned Wildlife Management Areas, monitors 38 Department held Conservation Easements, and provides regional input on all game and non-game wildlife management within the region. Before beginning his current position in Jonesboro in 2019, he worked as the Research and Communication Coordinator for the University of Maine’s Cooperative Forestry Research Unit. He developed a passion for the wildlife and wild places of Maine working with American woodcock at Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge, spruce grouse in commercial forests, and as the Interim Naturalist at Baxter State Park. He earned both his B.S. and M.S. in Wildlife Ecology at the University of Maine and lives in the town of Columbia.

Friend from the Field webinars take place LIVE on Thursdays from 4-5pm! We will record the webinar so that if you wish to view but can’t participate at that time, the presentation will be available to you on our websites and social media.
