Join Friends of Katahdin Woods and Waters Executive Director Andrew Bossie for a talk on Maine's newest addition to our National Park System.
Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, established in 2016, protects an ancient landscape in the North Maine Woods, home to the Wabanaki People for over 11,000 years. The Monument offers stunning views of Katahdin and the darkest skies East of the Mississippi River. You can follow in the footsteps of past visitors like Teddy Roosevelt, Frederic Edwin Church, and Henry David Thoreau to hike, canoe, camp, mountain bike, cross-country ski, snowshoe, snowmobile, hunt, and fish.
There is also the opportunity to be a part of mapping the Monument’s future. The National Park Service is in the middle of a planning process to decide on a framework that guides how the land will be managed for years to come. With the Monument celebrating its third anniversary on August 24, the National Park Service and the non-profit Friends of Katahdin Woods and Waters are working to ensure good stewardship of Maine’s new Monument for future generations.
