Description

The Readfield Fairgrounds is a 35-acre property owned by the Town of Readfield which was the historic site of a major agricultural fair and is now a mixture of fields and forest land. The property abuts the 300-acre Maranacook Community School property.  A 1 mile network of interconnecting trails has been constructed on the property including the McDougald Trail, Upper Fairgrounds Trail, and Lower Fairgrounds Trail. These trails travel through both field and forest over gently sloping terrain. Most of the trails have a crushed rock surface with the remainder being hard-packed dirt or gravel.

In addition, the trails interconnect with the town's newly constructed sidewalk along ME Route 17 (Main Street) and Millard Harrison Drive, which connects back to the Maranacook-Fairgrounds Link Trail to create numerous loop opportunities. This sidewalk also continues to the Maranacook Community School property and its trail system, allowing for extended trip opportunities.

There are two primary trailhead access points with parking; one located on the Church Road and the other on Millard Harrison Drive (access road to Maranacook Community School). The Upper Fairgrounds and McDougald Trails leave from the Church Road parking area and connect with the Upper and Lower Fairgrounds Trails.  The Maranacook-Fairgrounds Link Trail leaves from the Maranacook Trailhead and connects with the Upper Fairgrounds Trail.

Trail Tips

Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
Stick to established trails and campsites. If there's no trail, try to walk on rock, gravel, or snow and spread out so that your group doesn't create a trail.

Trailhead Information

There are two primary trailheads with parking.

  • The Church Road Trailhead is located on the east side of Church Road 0.3 miles north of the intersection of ME Routes 17 and 41 and the Church Road in downtown Readfield (at the blinking light). If traveling west on ME Route 17 (from Manchester and towards Kents Hill), turn right at the blinking light onto Church Road and travel 0.3 miles to the Fairgrounds on your right. Turn right into a parking area with a kiosk.
  • The Maranacook Trailhead is located near the School Superintendent’s Office (where parking is available) on the west side of Millard Harrison Drive (the access road to Maranacook Community School). If traveling west on ME Route 17 (from Manchester and towards Readfield), turn right at the Maranacook Community School sign onto Millard Harrison Drive and travel 0.3 miles to the Superintendent’s Office on your left. Trail kiosk and entrance is just north of the Superintendent’s Office.

The Lower Fairgrounds Trail can also be accessed from an intersection with the sidewalk along ME Route 17 (Main Street). No public parking is available at this location. A kiosk is located at the entrance to the Lower Fairgrounds Trail.

Great trail to walk in town. I do like the addition of the sidewalk for the trail to continue into downtown Readfield. One thing that could be improved upon would be to have a place to dispose your doggie doo bags into during the walk (maybe one at some key trail heads)?

The Fairground Trail here in Readfield is groomed and maintained with the intention that it can be used by joggers, walkers or the whole family. And, it has been constructed so that it is wheelchair accessible.
