Join the Maine Trail Crew and work on some of the most pristine, remote sections of Maine's Appalachian Trail. Help preserve this precious and wild resource for future generations of hikers. An enthusiastic staff awaits your arrival and is looking forward to building trail with you.
Projects focus on rebuilding and restoring heavily impacted sections of the Appalachian Trail, utilize rigging equipment and hand tools. This project will rehabilitate 800 feet of the Appalachian Trail between the junction of the Third Mountain Trail and the West Chairback Pond Trail; rock steps, rock waterbars, step stones, and check dams will be installed. Crew must be able to surmount a 10-foot-high stone cliff with steel rungs.
Persons 18 years old or older – of all backgrounds – are welcome. Enthusiasm, good health, energy and adaptability are vital. Willingness to follow instructions, comply with safety rules, and share chores is essential. Experience helps, but we teach trail skills.
The Maine Trail Crew will be working on the Appalachian Trail all summer, from June 20 through October 1, 2022. Trail projects will run from early Monday morning (you must arrive Sunday, by 4pm) to Friday midday. Some weeks start on Tuesdays due to holidays. Volunteers are welcome to join the Maine Trail Crew for one or more weeks, if space is available.
