Celebrate the Great Maine Outdoor Weekend with a fun afternoon winter outing in Topsham at the Cathance River Nature Preserve. Michelle will lead the group on a snowshoe or hike (based on conditions) on the trails at the Preserve. The trail leads down to the river where the ice formations in winter are often magical. We will follow the trail along the river and do as many trail sections as the group is up to. We will then either loop back or return via the same trail to the Ecology Center. Watch for animal tracks along the way and enjoy this beautiful woods walk.
You will have a chance to learn about the Cathance River Education Alliance. A staff member of CREA will join in the outing and open up the Center for us to visit and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate as we learn more about the flaura and fauna of the area. In addition, Michelle will present information about the Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust, which holds an easement on the property.
Trails are narrow with some short steeper sections. Snowshoes are required the snow depth calls for it, snowshoes can be made available if notified in advance. Microspikes or similar traction will be required if it is icy. Plan on about 2 or more hours for the outing.
To register, please email Michelle with information on your winter hiking experience, your equipment or if you need to borrow snowshoes, and a phone contact.
