Description

Cascade Park is located just north Eastern Maine Medical Center on State Street. During the summer months this park is a very popular picnicking spot, with many lovely nooks to enjoy the sun or the shade.

Beginning at the parking lot, there is one major trail that branches two ways heading uphill; the two sides come back together at the top of the hill. This trail is gravel and packed dirt, and it travels through predominantly White Pine forest. The climb here is easy to moderate. The trail continues beside the top of the 20 foot tall man-made waterfall, where you can see views of the park below. This trail hosts three different species of pine; along with the Eastern White Pine, there are also examples of Red Pine and Scotch Pine. The trail comes into a clearing (power lines) and continues heading to the right and up a short incline, it then curves back toward the park heading downhill. The trail travels beside grassy field on the left and then approaches the base of the waterfall. From here you can walk on the paved/brick pathways which lead to the gazebo, numerous benches and the large water fountain in the center of the park.

There is also a trail which travels up the side of the hill, next to the waterfall. This path is largely composed of packed dirt and pine needles, and it is fairly steep. This short trail meets up with the main trail at the top of the hill.

If you're looking to have a longer hike, you can take a side trail at the top of the hill; this trail leads over to Saxl Park. To get there, follow the directions as above until you reach the (power lines) clearing at the top of the hill. At this point you will take a left instead of a right; this packed dirt path connects the two parks.
