Description

This short paddle around the Holbrook Ponds is accessed by a 500 foot portage trail which ends at the north shore of Little Holbrook Pond. From the put-in on Little Holbrook it is a brief 0.5 mile paddle due south to another portage trail at the far end of the pond. This portage trail follows the stream between Holbrook and Little Holbrook Ponds south from the take-out for about 300 feet and comes out on the north shore of Holbrook Pond. From the put-in on the north shore of Holbrook Pond it is less than 1 mile to the far end of the pond.

The two short portage trails may be wet at times. Both are in need of improvement, but are easily passable.

Trail Tips

Dispose of Waste Properly
Keep Maine green and clean! Pick up trash, even if it's not yours. Leave soon-to-be trash like excess packaging, stickers, and twist ties at home.

Trailhead Information

From Millinocket: Travel about 10 miles northwest on the Baxter Park Road and turn left at the junction marked "Allagash." This short connecting road quickly comes to the Golden Road. Turn right and travel 17.5 miles northwest along the Golden Road. 1 mile past the northbound turn for the Telos Road, turn left onto an unmarked dirt road. Travel 1 mile down this road and park in the wide turn out. A wide portage trail follows an old logging road due south from this parking area for 500 feet to the north shore of Little Holbrook Pond. HIGH CLEARANCE VEHICLES ONLY.

Warning: the Golden Road is a private logging road, all visitors must yield to log trucks.
