Description

The Mystery Mountain Trail is a 1.5 mile out and back hiking trail that travels through the 67-acre Rumford Point Conservation Fund tract. From the parking area to the left of the driveway, the trail gradually gains elevation through a recently harvested forest stand for 0.3 miles before ascending via a switchbacks up a rocky hemlock-dotted ridge. The trail then traverses to two separate viewpoints overlooking Rumford Point, Sunday River Resort and the Presidential Range in White Mountains to the west. The trail ends at the second viewpoint, which is indicated by signage. It is marked with blue flagging tape and rock cairns.

The trail is name Mystery Mountain due to the fact that the name of the mountain is... well, a mystery! Best to embrace the unknown.

Trail Manager

The Conservation Fund purchased the Rumford Point tract in 2020 as part of the acquisition of over 15,000 acres of the Chadbourne Tree Farms land. As the management of the parcel is sorted out, Inland Woods + Trails has permission to construct and maintain the Mystery Mountain hiking trail. For more information about how to help with the campaign to purchase the land please contact:

Trail Tips

Dispose of Waste Properly
Dispose of solid human waste in a cathole 6-8 inches deep and at least 200 feet from water, camp, or trails. Don't forget to cover it up when you're done!

Trailhead Information

The Mystery Mountain Trailhead is located directly off US-2 in the heart of Rumford Point (Address: 1782 Route 2 Rumford ME). Turn at the signpost indicating the Mystery Mountain trailhead driveway. Drive up the driveway past the trailhead and turn right into the parking lot. Hike along the driveway back to the trailhead to begin your hike.
