Description

Scopan Mountain Trail leads up a moderately difficult forest trail. The trail surface is enhanced by the rock steps that were made by the Maine Conservation Corps. Along the way hikers can see a seasonal waterfall, a wetland frequented by moose and waterfowl, and several old-growth hemlock. The trail leads up the mountain to Scopan Knob (the summit) where there are views of Mt. Katahdin, Alder Lake, and the surrounding farm country.

Trail Tips

Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
Stick to established trails and campsites. If there's no trail, try to walk on rock, gravel, or snow and spread out so that your group doesn't create a trail.

Trailhead Information

From either Presque Isle or Ashland take ME-163 to Mapleton; in Mapleton turn onto the West Chapman Road which is next to the post office; follow the West Chapman Road to the end, 6 miles, where it turns into a gravel road; turn right at the first intersection and stay on the main gravel road for 2.2 miles to the Scopan Unit; turn right onto the new road and follow for 2 miles to the trailhead parking area. The intersections are signed. The trailhead is on the east side of Scopan Ridge and has parking for 8-10 vehicles.
