Description

The Torsey Pond Trails may be accessed from the trailhead in the parking lot. This trail network extends for just under 2 miles and abuts the shore at several points.

The Echo Lake Watershed Trails may be accessed from a trailhead marked with a plaque directly across the road from the Torsey Pond Nature Preserve. This short trail extends for .1 miles and offers access to two beaver bogs.

In 2001, Readfield purchased 92 acres along Torsey Pond for open space and recreation with funds from the Maine Land & Water Conservation Fund, a town appropriation, and local contributions. A conservation easement was accepted by the Kennebec Land Trust in 2003 to assure permanent protection.

The Echo Lake Watershed Preserve is a 200-acre parcel in the Echo Lake watershed purchased with funds raised by the Echo Lake Association and Kennebec Land Trust. The property will remain undeveloped to help protect the water quality of Echo Lake and to provide for wildlife habitat.

Both properties are comprised of wetland and hardwood-conifer forests, with the Torsey Pond Nature Preserve abutting Torsey Pond, providing multiple shoreline access points to visitors. Neither property contains drastic elevation changes, which makes for an easy but scenic hiking experience. Paddling in Torsey Pond is a common pastime of many who visit the preserve.

Other Information

Hunting is not permitted on these properties and dogs must be leashed at all times.

Trail Tips

Dispose of Waste Properly
Keep Maine green and clean! Pick up trash, even if it's not yours. Leave soon-to-be trash like excess packaging, stickers, and twist ties at home.

Trailhead Information

From the juncture of ME Route 17 and ME Route 41 in Kents Hill, take ME Route 41 one mile north to the Torsey Pond Nature Preserve parking lot on the right. Canoe or kayak access is available from a public boat launch at the south end of Torsey Pond on the Old Kents Hill Road.
