To reach Broadturn Farm, follow Broadturn Road for 5.3 miles west of US Route 1, or 0.8 miles south of ME Route 22. Turn onto Hanson Road and take the first left down the farm’s gravel driveway. Park along the edge of the driveway. The trail starts directly behind the toilet facilities.
The Silver Brook Trail, developed in 2009 as a boy scout project, descends from the trailhead to the hemlock-covered banks of Silver Brook. After crossing the stream, the trail climbs briefly and joins wider, grassy, former woods roads that make a loop around the property. The trail is marked with blue blazes and is mowed for most of the distance. Watch for the red-blazed tree and stonewalls that mark the back edge of the property.
Broadturn Farm is a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm located 10 miles from Portland. The property is in agricultural conservation with the Scarborough Land Trust, which bought the 434-acre property in 2004. Formerly called the Keith Meserve Farm, the land is one of the largest farm properties in the Greater Portland area. For more information, visit Broadturn Farm online.
This trail passes through a property that was acquired in part with funds from the Land for Maine’s Future program. For more information about the LMF program and the places it has helped to protect, please visit the LMF webpage.
