Description

The Messalonskee School Trails are located between Messalonskee High and Middle School. The forest trails include many species of trees with 32 species of trees and bushes identified with signs. Our rich trails have the beauty of a pine grove, multiple streams with 6 bridges, a small pond and remnants of an Apple Orchard from an old farm. Our Trails have 4 log bench Learning Centers that are easy access to the schools and public. Our trails offer varied terrain of winding forested pathways with some small hills.

Our Wooded trails are located within our school forest.

Loon Trail - located near the Messalonskee Middle School trailhead. Short trail leading to a small pond with two Loon Learning Centers with log seating.

Turkey Trail: a rough trail loop with the Fairy House Learning Center. This trail is a work in progress.

Moose Trail: starts at the Messalonskee Middle School entrance until it connects to the Eagle's Trail.

Eagle's Trail: is the longest trail with a 1.05 mile loop with the Eagle's Den Learning Center. The trail has 3 bridges, a pine grove, a variety of trees and 4 trailheads.

Fox Trail: connects from the football practice field to the Eagle's Trail.

Other Information

These trails were made possible through the collaborative efforts of many school students and staff in RSU 18, community members, and local businesses. The following grants have been instrumental in creating the learning centers, new entrance, providing trail improvements and educational opportunities; Maine Department of Conservation Recreational Trails Program, Lowe's Toolbox for Education and the Maine Commission for Community Service. Special Thanks go to The Messalonskee School Trails Committee and the RSU 18 Department of Grounds and Maintenance for their hard work and dedication.

The forest trails are open to the public. There are no public restrooms in the area, but a port-a-potty may be available in the summer months at the nearby ball fields.
