Stroudwater Trail

This lovely wooded trail follows the bank of the Stroudwater River from Portland's historic Stroudwater Village to Westbrook.
Trail Activity
2.2 miles, One Way
Dirt/Forest Floor, Gravel/Crushed Stone

The Stroudwater Trail connects the Portland peninsula to the Westbrook City Line. This  trail is heavily wooded with both flat and hilly sections. The surface is gravel and packed earth. Benches have been provided at scenic outlooks. The west end of trail between Blueberry Road and Hutchins Drive is closed in winter as it crosses through one of Portland’s few remaining deer yards and provides valuable deer habitat during the winter months. The trail crosses under the Maine Turnpike behind the UNUM campus and continues east along the river at a flat slope, with boardwalks traversing wet areas. Near the River’s Edge Drive trailhead, the gravel trail ascends up a steep grade via stairs to reach Congress Street.

Shaded and in the woods the majority of the time, this trail follows the winding Stroudwater river. Very wide trail and smooth- good for walking/biking/jogging.

This is a great lunchtime walk for people working on outer Congress St or towards the Mall. I always see some kind of wildlife and the canopy keeps the trail comfortable even on hot days.
