Union River Walk

A short trail on which all can experience the beauty and wildlife of the river along a tree-lined path, only a few short minutes from Main Street.
Trail Activity
Accessible Adventure Walking
0.30 miles, Round Trip
Dirt/Forest Floor, Gravel/Crushed Stone
Permitted on leash

Starting behind the Ellsworth Public Library, the trail is a short, easy walk along the Union River. The first 165-feet of the trail are ADA accessible, with a gravel surface of about three to four feet wide. The ADA section ends at an overlook where visitors can stop, relax, and take in a view of the river, and maybe spot some ducks or other wildlife.

Past the ADA section, the trail narrows and includes a few potential obstacles such as stone steps, and passes by some impressive cliffs on the non-river side of the path. From the end of the trail, hikers can get a good view of the dam.

Trailhead Information

There is public parking at City Hall in the center of Ellsworth. It's entrance is off Main Street, 0.1 miles from the bridge and on the left heading east and up Main Street; or on the right 0.2 miles from the stoplight at the top of the hill heading west and down Main Street. From this municipal lot, walk west (left when facing City Hall) towards State Street, cross State Street to the library, and head down the driveway to the left of the library. The trailhead is behind the library.

Parking may also be found on State Street by the library.

The driveway leading down to the trailhead is a steep slope, and may be difficult to navigate for some. If you have concerns about accessing the trailhead from the City Hall lot or State Street, please contact FBC at or (207) 422-2328.
