Description

The town-owned Winnick Woods includes extensive woodlands, wetlands, a pond, and a meadow. Grades on the trails can be steep. Many bridges and boardwalks have been constructed. A large portion of these trails were recently machine-built primarily for mountain biking use and are a favorite destination for local mountain bikers.

The trail network includes the Cross Hill Trails, on land owned by the town and protected by an easement held by CELT. The Cross Hill Trails offer additional access to the network, including off of Wells Road, Cross Hill Road, and at the end of Hawthorne Road.

Beautiful day in the 20*s-30*s F. Icy and muddy . Good trail system, main trails marked with colored diamonds....., side trails, cut-off trails not marked...confusing without studying map. MT bikers, hikers and dogs (including ours). Varied terrain through woods with exposed roots, rock, ledge, mud, boardwalks and soft forest floor. Mostly single track from what we did but some woods roads. Moderately easy trail. Back Cove is easy, you can't push a baby carriage on this trail without difficulty.

This is a go to walk for me. Nice trail with lots of variety. It can get a bit busy with hikers and bikers. No real signage on the trails but using the emap in Maine Trail Finder and GPS is sufficient.

The trail map at the trailhead looks a bit different from what's on this site (will post a pic for reference), and it's not marked as well as some other trails I've been on, but it's otherwise a great trail. Passed maybe eight or nine bikers- trail is very well packed down and good for that activity. Lots of people on it on a Friday evening, but the parking was ample. There aren't any spectacular views but it was bugless and still a pleasant forest walk for me.

Great little loop of a trail. Easy to get lost so be sure to make note of the trail markings. Nice field opening at the beginning of the trail so bring a picnic! Surprisingly quiet on a Saturday mid-day in April.
