The Whitefield Salmon Preserve is a 56-acre property acquired in 1999, located at the confluence of the Sheepscot's main stem and West Branch. This property along with property on the west side of the West Branch, and easements to the north of Howe Road, protect over 4,000 feet of prime Atlantic Salmon rearing and spawning habitat. The trails provide ample opportunity for exploring the preserve whether hiking, snowshoeing, fishing or hunting.
Salmon Trail (1 mile): The main trail makes a loop from the parking area to the confluence of the two Sheepscot branches and then heads north along the main stem of the Sheepscot before returning to the parking area through open woodlands. This easy meander passes along the riparian areas of the river where evidence of beaver is abundant. Walking this trail in different seasons allows visitors to witness the changes caused by high and low water flows occurring in riparian areas. Spring seasons offer a wonderful carpet of wildflowers throughout, including Trout Lilies, Lady Slippers, and Wood Anemones.
Blue Trail (0.3 miles): The Blue Trail leaves from the bridge over the West Branch and follows the river to the confluence. Hikers can return along this trail or meet up with the Salmon Trail and make a longer loop. The trail goes through open forests and stands of "Musclewood" (American Hornbeam) along the banks. Poison ivy is present along the lower reaches of this trail.
Sheepscot West Branch Trail (1.7 miles):To enjoy more of the beautiful river in this area, you can access the Sheepscot West Branch Trail, which is across the discontinued North Howe Road where the Blue Trail exits the Whitefield Salmon Preserve. The Sheepscot West Branch Trail is maintained by the Whitefield Trails Committee. This trail with a keyhole loop offers views over river rapids and oxbows with numerous picnic and fishing spots along the river’s edge. Depending on the season, you may catch a glimpse of the array of wildlife that live along the river. Caution: poison ivy is present along the lower reaches of this trail.
There are no facilities at this property. Leave No Trace: please carry out what you carry in and do not take souvenirs. As hunting is permitted, both hunters and hikers should use extreme caution during hunting season.
Dogs should be under control of their owners at all times; please clean up after your pets.

You can hear the rush of the rapids as you head toward the river. This is well marked and offer gorgeous views of the river!
We looped back and then picked up the white blazed trail, The Salmon Trail. This trail is more undulating up and down. It was muddy in places, but easily navigated.
Highly recommend!
