Description

Most of these three- to four-foot wide single track trails are accessible to novice and intermediate riders. Some are surfaced with locally-sourced crushed shale mixed with hardpan soil while others are native dirt. The trails loop through a variety of forest types. Beginners can enjoy Golden Road and Wannigan for smooth flowing riding. For those looking for a challenge, more difficult trails, including bike-only gravity trails can be found mixed throughout the network. Upper and Lower Ripogenus are favorites of many enthusiast mountain bikers. The mountain biking trails were designed by the International Mountain Bicycling Association and Outdoor Sport Institute.

In addition to the network of purpose-built single track trails, Hammond Ridge and Black Cat Mountain have a wide network of cross-country ski trails and roads that riders can usually access as conditions permit, with plenty of hills to provide a workout.

Other Information

Mountain Bikes are available for rent through the Katahdin Gear Library in Millinocket. Fat bikes are available for rent on site at the New England Outdoor Center. Contact NEOC at (800) 766-7238 for additional information or to reserve a bike.

Trailhead Information

From Katahdin Avenue in Millinocket, take Bates Road, which turns into Millinocket Road/Baxter Park Road towards Baxter State Park. 8.2 miles from the turn off Katahdin Avenue, turn right on Blackcat Road, which is marked with a New England Outdoor Center sign. The trailhead at NEOC is at the end of the road, about one mile down.
